I think attention deficit disorder (ADHD) is overly prescribed as a disorder. I don't trust the pharmaceutical industry.
Although ADHD is one of the most common neurodevelopment disorders as a parent I tend to believe now that we are too quick to assign or prescribe medication. I think this is the case because of the times we live in. Children, teens and adults have more options, distractions, shiny objects fighting for our attention. With the advent of some many things it is hard to concentrate, focus and prioritize. How to quiet our minds needs to be trained. Parents should limit the input firehose their kids have access to. Children diagnosed with ADHD may have trouble paying attention, controlling impulsive behaviors (may act without thinking about what the result will be), or be overly active. They are overstimulated.
I think this is helped by our obsessions with being online. Unplugging the tablet and phone will only help your child. I have seen kids go "bonkers" when the wifi drops like a crack fiend when the high wears off. I have seen "adult" security guards, and tellers oblivious to their environment because of the online addictive behaviors.
Those "tiny screens" may be the antichrist but you would laugh at me for suggesting such a thing. Having an attention deficit means:
- Having a short attention span
- Being easily distracted.
- Making careless mistakes
- Appearing forgetful or losing things.
- Being unable to stick to tasks that are tedious or time-consuming.
- Appearing to be unable to listen to or carry out instructions.
What if all of those troublesome symptoms were caused by a condition reinforced by watching hours of content every waking hour on ones' electronic device?
Just a thought.
